Meg’s Story

Site created on February 15, 2021

I started this page to help keep people informed of my medical journey. The following is a description of what has happened so far.

In September of 2020 I was having abdominal pain that was suspected of being a hernia. A CT scan was done and it showed no sign of a hernia or any other issues. The surgeon and I decided to take a wait and see approach. In the middle of December I was having increased pain, so another CT scan was done. Still, there was no sign of a hernia, and the decision was made to do laparoscopic surgery to locate and repair the hernia. On January 26th of 2021 they went in with a camera, but found no sign of a hernia. When they were in with the camera, they saw irregularities on my left ovary. A CA-125 (ovarian cancer marker test) was done, and an ultrasound to better to see the ovary. It was determined that the cyst was benign. During this time, I dug through my prior radiology results, and saw that a 12mm cyst on my spine was noted on the December CT scan, and that an MRI was recommended. By this time, I had scheduled an appointment with a new primary care physician. At my appointment with her on February 8th, an MRI was scheduled and done the same day. It was confirmed that I had a cyst that needed to be addressed. A chest CT scan was done on that Wednesday, and it showed innumerable spots in my upper lungs. A PET scan was done 2 days later, and there was “uptake” noted in the cyst on my spine, the spots in my upper lungs, a spot on my upper right arm bone, and in the marrow of my spine. An appointment with a hematologist was scheduled for the following Tuesday.

I (or my mom) will continue to post updates as we learn more about what I have, and how I will be treated.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Meg James

I’ve been meaning to post an update for quite some time now, but life or my memory has gotten in the way time and time again. At least I can say that no news is good news. 😁

I had my first PET scan in about a year at the end of September, and then met with my oncologist. There were a couple areas that showed uptake, but they both turned out to be plain old inflammation. My lungs also continue to show uptake, but it’s almost exactly the same as one year ago, so that’s good. The reason for the ongoing uptake in my lungs is due to smoking. And although I’ve decreased how much I smoke, I still haven’t quit. So I’ve recommitted to smoking cessation by starting a medication, wearing patches, and have set a quit date of on or before December 4th. I have another scan and oncology appointment in late December, so I’m hoping we’ll see the amount of uptake decrease. I will post an update at that time

Life marches on, and I try to take it one day at a time. It’s strange to look back and see how my conception of “normal” has changed. Yes, I have cancer, but it’s become just another facet of my life at this point. And maybe that’s why posting an update hasn’t been a priority. 🤷🏼‍♀️ All that I really know is how incredibly grateful I am for my family, loved ones, and friends.
