Maya’s Story

Site created on August 14, 2021

After a few hours of pushing, Olivia was exhausted and labor wasn’t progressing so her OB decided an urgent c-section needed to happen. Maya had a difficult time coming out but let out a few cries once she was finally out! Within a couple of minutes Maya was having a difficult time breathing and then her heart stopped beating shortly after. CPR was immediately started and she ended up receiving two doses of epinephrine and was intubated. Her heart started beating after 30 minutes of compressions. Children’s transport was called in the beginning of CPR so they arrived shortly after her heart started beating again. Jeremy went with Maya while Olivia stayed behind at Methodist. Since Maya was without oxygen for a while, they are monitoring her brain and other organs for any injuries. She will be on a cooling bed for 72 hours to minimize brain swelling and to reduce the chance of a brain injury. Her liver and kidneys aren’t performing perfectly so they will be closely monitoring her labs and urine output. We will continue to post updates as soon as we know more.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Olivia Cherrier

Maya had surgery yesterday to correct her hip dysplasia! She was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in December. She was in 2 different braces but unfortunately neither worked so the final option was surgery. Overall the surgery went very well. She did have to get two different casts since the MRI showed that the cast wasn’t in perfect position. She woke up very loopy from anesthesia. She slept and ate good all night so we were able to discharge this morning! Maya will be in the cast for 12 weeks then will likely be in a brace for a few months afterwards. She’ll go back to the OR in 6 weeks to get a cast exchange. We should be able to go home the same day!

During the surgery, ENT also placed bilateral ear tubes. Her left ear was clear but her right ear was very plugged. Hopefully this explains her not perfect hearing test of her right ear! We’ll find out in a few weeks when she goes to audiology for hopefully a last hearing test.

She recently had a follow up appointment with neurology! She was so impressed with how well Maya is doing. There were a couple minor things she noticed during her appointment a few months ago but those things have since resolved! She had no concerns about her development.

Maya continues to do well in physical therapy and is reaching every single milestone on time! She’ll continue to work with physical therapy once she’s out of the cast to help her catch up since there’s a lot she can’t do while in the cast. She just started to eat solid foods and is doing really well with that. This is such a relief since we were warned that learning to eat may be traumatizing due to having that breathing tube! This is definitely not the case and gets upset when she’s all done.

Our prayer requests for our sweet girl:

-That her high muscle tone in her legs continues to decrease

-The cast will correct her hip dysplasia

-She will pass her hearing test

Thank you so much!
