Max’s Story

Site created on June 7, 2022

Welcome to Max Krueger's CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting!

Max is having open heart surgery June 8th at Mayo Hospital in Rochester.  Max was born with a bicuspid aortic valve which has become very leaky causing his heart to work very hard.

The surgeon is planning to replace his aortic valve and aortic root with a mechanical valve and aortic root graft.  Because Max has had issues with atrial fibrillation, they also plan to clip his atrial appendage to reduce his risk of future blood clots.

He will be in the ICU for 1-2 days and spend the rest of his hospital stay in the progressive care unit.  It sounds like the total stay will be 6-8 days.

We will find out the time of surgery later this evening and will post an update then.   Thank you for thinking of Max!

Journal entry by Louisa Krueger

This picture says it all about Max.   The adventure of our most amazing Maxwell continues and his improvement day to day is incredible.   Today, Max is wearing a pull over t-shirt with a pretty narrow neck AND button shorts-- both new milestones.

Max is going to cardiac rehab 3 times a week and they have him walking on a treadmill while montoring his heart.   His heart is behaving like a champ and it is so reassuring to know he can move and walk at home as he heals.  The cardiac rehab people are awesome.

Max has almost no pain, is sleeping all night, is able to go out for lunch and walk to get the mail.   You would honestly never know he had surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago if you saw him.  He is moving pretty well and is much less stiff.

Our only hiccup is his blood thinning medication which we are still working to get to a "therapeutic" level.  Because of his risk of blood clots, they did start twice daily injections of lovenox.  Hopefully these won't last too much longer but honestly it is reassuring to know his blood levels is better with it and we don't have to worry about a clot.

We are traveling to Brainerd this afternoon to enjoy the lake with the plan to stay overnight.   I NEVER would have believed even 5 days ago that Max would feel up to that.   He's cheery and chatty and 100% Max which makes us all happy.

Enjoy the weekend... With love.
