Maureen’s Story

Site created on May 3, 2021

Welcome to Maureen! Smullen’s Caringbridge site. (No, that ! is not a typo. In typical Maureen fashion, she accidentally added it to her Covid-19 vaccination sign-up. When she showed up for her jab, they couldn’t find her reservation without including the ! in her name. She has now adopted it into her permanent record. This, as we all know, is perfect for her. In fact even her doctors now greet her by saying “Maureen!”)

The point of this page is simple: Maureen has about a zillion people who care about her and want to know how she is doing and stay in touch. At the same time, she is going through a challenging medical situation – Maureen never does anything in a small way – so as much as she would like to, she simply doesn’t have the energy or bandwidth to respond to everyone.

On this page we will update what is going on with her and try to keep everyone informed. Without invading her privacy, we will post as much as we can and keep as current as possible. You can leave messages for her and find out what you can do for her and send her.

Like almost everything in life, we have a few guidelines.  Okay, rules.  Rule Number 1: You cannot send flowers to City of Hope. Number 2: Maureen is a badass.  She only needs positive thoughts and comments.  If your are going to tell her she is brave, or that  g-- only sends what a person can handle, keep it to yourself or  be prepared for the fall out.  All who are familiar with Oso & Bean's most popular magnets know exactly how that will go! And that is why we love her.

Silly memes here, or on her Facebook page are encouraged as are great stories and photos.

We are working on a way to figure out scheduling for visits in real life, or via Facetime, since her smile and laugh are contagious, and that’s a virus we all need.

Thanks everyone!

P.S.
CaringBridge constantly solicits donations. They make it sound like without your donations, they will remove this page. That's not true. If you'd like to donate, that's totally fine, but it isn't required by any means.

Journal entry by Sharon Liveten

Dear friends I have the heartbreaking job of letting you know that on Monday August 28th, Maureen lost her fight.  It doesn't seem real, and it is certainly unfair.

In typical fashion, Maureen did not want a memorial service. She wanted a party. So  there will be one. A big one. Filled with stories about Maureen. You can help me celebrate her by sending me your email address so I can invite you when it is organized. My email address is SharonLiveten@gmail.com
