Matt’s Story

Site created on June 10, 2021

In 2019 Matt was diagnosed with AML. His treatment plan at that time was induction chemotherapy followed by 3 rounds of consolidation chemotherapy. The physicians had told us though that if his leukemia ever relapses he would need a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, in February 2021 it was officially confirmed that Matt had relapsed. He was admitted to Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) in February where he went through induction chemotherapy again and thankfully met remission immediately (he did the first time as well!) which the physicians tell us is no small feat. Now the next step towards his journey for cure is a bone marrow transplant. Thank you for everyone's love and support during this time. We feel all of your prayers!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lindsay Weaver

Can you believe one year ago today Matt received his bone marrow transplant?! Happy Re-Birthday Matt! When someone receives a bone marrow transplant, they call it a re-birthday.

It is hard to believe that it’s already been a year.  We wanted to provide everyone with a final update.  Matt is doing well and living life normally with no restrictions. Matt will continue to receive all of his childhood vaccinations every other month for the next year at which point he will be fully vaccinated. The doctors will continue to monitor him closely for the next year with weekly bloodwork to make sure there are no signs of a relapse.

He had his 1 year bone marrow biopsy in the middle of May. The results came back just a few days ago and he is still fully engrafted and there are no signs of leukemia in his bone marrow.  Praise the Lord! if there are no signs of leukemia by 6/25/23 Matt’s doctors will consider him cured!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts, support and prayers over the last year!
