The day began with Matt in a school uniform, going for a checkup with questions for the doctor. However, the day ended with Matt in a hospital bed, hearing a troubling diagnosis with a sense of shock.

Matt has been diagnosed with leukemia. He has AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia)

The initial plan is for treatment lasting about 6 months. We are anticipating five cycles. A cycle might be a month at Children’s Hospital with about one week at home. During the first cycle, he will get 10 days of chemo and a weekly LP. That’s a lumbar puncture with a slight amount of spinal fluid withdrawn and chemo inserted.

During this hospital time Matt will have a very delicate immune system because they are killing off all of the white blood cells they can, and then giving time for them to build back up.
More tests are currently being run on more specifics about the leukemia. After the first cycle, more testing will done to determine what else is needed.
We are grateful for the the great staff here at the hospital. One of us stays with Matt most of the time.

We are returning home after getting Matt’s central broviac line taken out of his chest. The procedure went well, and it’s another major step in returning to normal life!
