Newest Update

Journal entry by Wendy Koperski (Pioske)

Day +45 Things have been going pretty well over the past week. Over the past six days he has only had one incident of vomiting and he feels confident the food was bad and it made him sick. He is feeling great, no nausea, appetite is back to normal, able to take walks and getting good sleep, less naps during the day.
Today he had blood work and his counts continue to trend up and the transplant team is very happy with how his counts are progressing. His magnesium level is still low, this will continue for as long as he is on another medication that helps prevent his body from rejecting the transplant. The nice part is he can now do his magnesium transfusions at the apartment. Everything he needs is delivered to the apartment weekly and he connects the line to his port and the transfusion starts. Right now he is getting 2g but they are going to bump him up to 4g per day in hopes that it will offset what he loses from taking the other medication.
Since he is not experiencing nausea and vomiting they have taken him off all of the medications to treat/prevent this. He has them on hand if needed. He was scheduled for an endoscopy tomorrow, but after today's appointment they have decided to cancel it. If his vomiting returns then they will schedule the endoscopy.
I think we are all cautiously optimistic that we may have finally gotten over the hump. We all know we've felt this way before only to slide backwards. The biggest difference this time is how good he feels, he says he feels about 95% back to normal. Fingers crossed he wont backslide this time.
Today was just another reminder how lucky we are to have access to such quality health care. Our insurance has provided unbelievable coverage. We are so blessed to have these things, many people do not have access to health care/insurance and cannot afford basic health care. God has truly blessed us.
