Matt’s Story

Site created on March 6, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support, prayers, and words of hope and encouragement

It has been a tough week in the Brass household. Matt’s had a reoccurring back pain for a while so last week our family physician had an MRI done to see if there was a disc issue. He did have a bulging disc but the MRI also showed multiple highly extensive metastasized spots. We have now had various scans done & Tuesday March 5th he had a biopsy of his liver. The doctors are confident it is unfortunately cancer. We will get a formal diagnosis Friday after biopsy results get back but given the number of different places it is at it’s highly unlikely it is benign.

As we told the kids, we believe in a God of miracles so right now we ask that you help us storm heaven for a miracle & that all the doctors’ assumptions are wrong & that what Matt has is easily treatable. If it is cancer, we pray that the doctors have the wisdom to treat it correctly & the treatment works. But more than anything we pray that Matt & I have the strength & courage to tackle this nasty disease & show our kids firsthand how to carry the cross we have been given with love & gratitude for the Lord. We pray that our suffering might be redemptive & that we can unite it with Christ’s suffering on the cross for the salvation of souls. We greatly appreciate your prayers! I will keep you posted as we learn more. One day at a time.....one moment at a time......Jesus I trust in You!!!💞🙏🏻 🌹

P.S. I have always loved music. I’m especially drawn to good Christian music. As for me, it is another beautiful form of prayer especially when I struggle to find the words to pray. I came across this song the night before we first learned of the issues in Matt’s MRI & I immediately felt very drawn & connected to it. The words & raw emotion are exactly what was on my heart the next day. May it bring all of our friends & family the same peace & comfort.

Each year over the holidays, the blood donation centers struggle to get enough donors to meet the demands of our communities . During Matt’s illness, he received numerous blood transfusions.  He spent a lot of November and December at the infusion center or hospital getting blood both years he fought cancer. It always helped him to feel better and get the energy & strength he needed to be able to celebrate the holidays with our family. In 2020, we spent most of Christmas Eve as a family at the hospital while he got a transfusion. I remember Matt telling the kids that day about how other people’s generous gift of blood was helping to save his life & how we needed to pay that gift forward.

This year in celebration of Matt’s birthday on December 4th, the kids & I have decided to have a blood drive. Our goal is to get at least 53 donations in honor of his 53rd birthday. We are running the drive from today through the end of the year. You can donate wherever it is most convenient for you. Please just sign up on our sign up genius with your name and location or text or message me if you donate.

Donating blood literally saves lives. We will forever be grateful for the extra time we got with Matt because of generous gifts of blood that were donated by complete strangers. Please help us pay this great act of kindness forward. God bless!

You can donate any day at the Nebraska Community Blood Bank in Lincoln & Omaha. Sign up by visiting the Nebraska Community Blood Bank’s website at https://www.ncbb.org.
