Mason’s Story

Site created on October 6, 2018

Mason was first diagnosed in the fall of 2018 with Ewing’s sarcoma after having persistent bone pain in his right femur. He completed four rounds of chemotherapy before his surgery in December 2018. They removed a large part of his right femur and replaced it with a graft and stabilized his leg with a rod and many pins. They were able to remove most of his tumor. He then completed 10 more rounds of intense chemotherapy before being officially cancer free in June of 2019.

Mason was in remission for almost a year before being re-diagnosed in the summer of 2020. The cancer was no longer localized and was in a few different spots in his body.

Mason was a warrior. He fought this awful disease for 3 years. Mason entered the gates of Heaven on November 29th of 2021.

This isn’t our story to tell—it’s God’s. He heals, He strengthens, and gives us hope every single day. All of this is worth it for one person to know who Jesus is.

Journal entry by Andie Roese

Today marks 9 months since my sweet Mason went to be with Jesus. 9 months that Mason has been living a new life, completely healed and running like he had always dreamed of doing. 9 months free of all pain and suffering. For us, it has been 9 months full of anger, tears, and confusion, yet the Lord has allowed us to have many glimpses of joy along this journey. It is by the Lord's strength that we as a family are here today, continuing to walk not my sight, but by faith as we share Mason's story to the people surrounding us. Time and time again I have to remind myself that God isn't done writing Mason's story. Witnessing Mason's testimony unfold throughout so many people we love, including distant strangers has been so incredibly heart warming to be a part of.

Today we choose to celebrate 9 months with Jesus, still allowing us to have moments of sadness but reminding ourselves to choose joy.

3 years ago many of you were apart of the Steps for Sarcoma event through the James Cancer Center Sarcoma Team. This event directly impacts the research that is being done in Columbus for patients suffering with any type of sarcoma cancer. The last few years it has been virtual/cancelled due to COVID, but this year (praise Jesus) it is back on.. in-person! The 5k walk is on Sunday, September 18th in Columbus.  We have created a team named "Team Mason" and we would LOVE to be able to do this walk with all of you. We are also so happy to share that the coffee truck, Rising Sun Coffee, will be there to serve every individual wanting a caffeine boost for the day with all proceeds going towards Steps for Sarcoma. 3 years ago, Mason was in remission from his first diagnosis and was able to be a part of this walk. This year, we walk for him. We celebrate his life as well as the many others who cannot be there to participate and for those who are currently fighting this awful disease. You can find the  link below if you are interested in joining us! Again, The team name is "Team Mason" and you should be able to directly join it! If you have any problems, please let us know!
