Thank you for visiting my page. My name is Mary Zack and I am a 2x Stage IV cancer warrior. At the age of 17 I was diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer. I fought for my life during my senior year and won! Today, at the age of 42, I am again fighting for my life.

In April 2022 I as admitted to the hospital for my appendix. While in the hospital my appendix ruptured, I went septic and underwent emergency surgery. During this time, the CT scan showed a mass in my lower left lobe of my lung. After several biopsies it was found to be a malignancy. I had cancer. AGAIN. At that time we were hopeful that my thoracic surgeon would be able to perform a lobectomy and I would enter treatment at stage II with a good chance at survival. Unfortunately, that was not the case as the surgeon found the cancer invaded my pleura (the lining of the lung) rendering my tumor inoperable. I entered surgery stage II and came out stage IV.

After numerous tests, including genetic testing and meeting with several oncologists we were informed that not only did I have Stage IV NSCLC, but I have a rare mutation known as KRAS G12D. It is a rare lung cancer typically not caused by smoking. As of today there is NO targeted treatment available.

My oncology team at Northwestern Memorial has been treating me with various chemotherapy agents that are available. I've been on some form of chemo or immunotherapy for the last 14 months and none of the drugs are working on my rare case. So, in August 2023 I was entered into a clinical trial for 2 immunotherapy drug combination. My family and I have done extensive research on alternative therapies as leading cancer hospitals like Sloan Kettering are using some in cases with my mutation.  In October 2023 I added a naturopath doctor to my care team and I will be starting new therapies that have published studies showing the aid in helping anti cancer therapies as well as fighting the tumor itself.

Today I remain in the clinical trial and I am initiating high dose IV vitamin c, lions mane mushroom and I am planning to add ozone therapy soon.  These alternative treatments are not covered by my insurance so I am appreciative of everyone helping to support me fighting for my life.

I am single, with a single income and insurance and I’ve been working full time since diagnosis of Stage IV. They gave me 2 years to live in August 2022 and I’m still here but I don’t know how long I have left. I’m really hoping to be able to take work off and come home.

It truly takes a village to fight this unimaginable beast. Stage IV diagnosis is the most terrifying thing to experience and I’m trying to save my life. I think I will survive thanks to all of you. I truly love you all.

Love,

Mary

Newest Update

Journal entry by Mary Zack

Grateful for a direct flight in and out today and no more barium for CT scans!

My expectations were high today for my CT scan coming off an initial 7 week 30% reduction.

I was confident; so the news I received was extremely defeating today. 2 of my tumors grew in size, one reduced in size, and  I have some new trace plueral malignancy in my right lung now. She is considering me stable yet there is new growth to keep an eye on as I will move forward at least for another cycle.

I’m scared, but not ready to give up. I will remain in the trial for another 7 weeks while implementing alternative therapies again. I will also need to get more aggressive with my diet and exercise. I will pray. Hanging on for life. There has to be a reason for all this pain ❤️🙏💫

There is no stage 5.
