Mary ’s Story

Site created on April 25, 2022

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your prayers, support, and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Many people probably don’t know that my mom was born with a congenital heart defect, and had open heart surgery at age 22 to repair the pulmonary stenosis. That operation has done her well over the last 50 years, but within the last few years has started leaking. They have been monitoring her during that time. In early March, she started not feeling well and was retaining fluid in her abdominal region. In mid-March she spent almost a week at Abbott Northwestern hospital trying to figure things out. The leakage from the valve is causing other organs distress (kidneys, liver). She was released and set up with some home health care and follow-ups, but last week it became too much and she was hospitalized again at United Hospital. She has received excellent care and we are so thankful for the kind nurses and staff that helped her (and us!).

So … she needs a transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement. We found out yesterday that the valve they use for that procedure has been recalled. Complicating things is the fact that only one doctor in Minnesota does this procedure, and he is at the Mayo Clinic.

We know how many people love my mom, so we decided to go this route to keep everyone updated.

Your prayers are requested and welcomed. We know everything is in the Lord’s hands.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out. It means so much to us.

Journal entry by Teri Schierenbeck

Thank you, everyone, for your prayers and positive thoughts! Mom’s procedure went well, the clip was placed to control the leakage on her tricuspid valve, and we are hopeful she will be released tomorrow.
