Mary’s Story

Site created on May 11, 2022

In April of 2016, Mary had a full hysterectomy, after her doctors diagnosed her with endometrial adenocarcinoma. At the time, her doctors and surgical team felt confident that the cancer had not metastasized or spread to any other parts of her body, and it was determined no further treatment would be required. Mary continued to go to regular exams to watch for any signs that the cancer had returned, but in April of 2021, five years after the hysterectomy, doctors still hadn't found anything and she was considered cancer free.

In winter of this year, Mary developed a cough that was persistent and seemed to be gradually getting worse instead of better. On April 1, 2022, she had a visit with her primary provider who ordered a chest x-ray. It was on this x-ray that medical professionals found a mass in Mary's lung.

In the following weeks, Mary underwent a CT scan, biopsy, and PET scan, so doctors could get a better idea of what the nature of the mass was. Doctors seemed certain there was no way this mass could be in any way related to the endometrial cancer, because recurrence is considered rare after five years. However, after her biopsy results were sent to Mayo for a second opinion, it was determined that the mass on her lungs is in fact an endometrial adenocarcinoma.

Mary has met with both a radiation oncologist and a medical oncologist, who, at this time, feel the best course of treatment is radiation. Mary begins daily (on weekdays) radiation treatments at the Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo on May 18. Her oncologist's plan is to have her complete 15 treatments. During the course of treatment, they will monitor any progress or changes to determine if more radiation or chemo is necessary later on. Due to the location of the tumor (towards the top of the right lung pressing into the trachea and esophagus), surgery is not a viable option.

Thank you for visiting Mary's CaringBridge Site. I(Abby) will do my best to keep it updated as updates happen. We are only asking for continued prayers for Mary and for the radiation to be successful. Prayers are also appreciated for Tom, Sarah, myself, Jakob, Lane and Marge, and the rest of the family as we help Mary navigate this situation.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Abby Berg

Mary had her latest PET Scan done on April 16th, followed by an appointment with one of her oncologists. The spots in her abdomen are still there and still growing, although slowly, so her oncologist advised getting them taken care of.

Consequently, Mary will begin another 10-dose round of radiation next Thursday, May 2nd. The dosage is lower than her last set of treatments, so we are hoping the side effects will be minimal, and the long term effects will be less than when she received treatments near her lungs.

The good news is there were no new spots, which means the estrogen blocker is continuing to work!
Mary has been feeling generally OK. She still coughs a lot and occasionally has issues swallowing. Both are lingering effects from the radiation to the original tumor near her lungs and trachea. For now, her pulmonologist and primary care physician will continue to monitor.

Mary continues to check off her bucket list items in the meantime. She and Tom shared a week long adventure to Arizona in February. She is looking forward to having Abby and Jakob (and cats) move in over the summer as they transition back to Minnesota from Illinois.

Please say some prayers for Mary, especially during the month of May as she undergoes her next round of treatments! St. Peregrine is the patron Saint of Cancer Patients, so consider addressing some prayers to him!
