Mary’s Story

Site created on March 14, 2021

Our mom has been fighting an infection for a couple weeks in her chest along with a jaw infection she has had 3 oral surgeries for. On March 3rd she went to her PCP and was diagnosed with pneumonia. I brought her a few groceries on Saturday afternoon March 6th and she did not look well, was very confused, & lethargic. We talked Saturday night, a few times Sunday, and a few times Monday all the same things she was still not feeling well, sleeping a lot, and had some confusion. I tried reaching her Tuesday and Wednesday by phone and text with no response or call back which was odd but I knew she had just started a new job on top of not feeling well. On Friday morning March 12th I was alert by a friend & coworker of hers she hadn’t reported to work all week and no one can get ahold of her since her phone is off.

I got to my moms house at 10:45am Friday and found her on her couch barely conscious. She could hardly stand and did not know who I was at all. Got her to my car and rushed to Sanford ER by noon. They took her back right away and began multiple tests & scans. She has been admitted to the COVID ICU unit at Sanford.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Danielle Fastert

Good Evening Everyone-

It has been 12 days since my last update on mom. Since the last update she was moved to Encompass Health Rehab Hospital on the 16th to do intense rehab for more cognitive work to hopefully get her memory fully back. She is still having quite a few episodes of doing & saying random things that just don’t make sense. And she is quite forgetful still. But she ambulates quite well. Also, she will be loosing more of her index finger and a lot of her thumb, they both are quite necrotic.

Well since she has been at Encompass Health mom has refused any rehab. :/ She doesn’t want to leave her room most of the time. She also refuses one of her heart meds that prevents blood clots, Lovenox. Unfortunately, her refusing these things has put us at a bad spot. Insurance will now stop paying and mom will have to be moved out of his amazing rehab hospital to another facility by early next week. Makes my heart break.

Some hard decisions will be made in the next few days about the best placement for mom where she will be safe, help her memory come back more, and she will also enjoy(best she can).

I know people have been wondering & that’s all I got for now. Not a whole lot has changed since she got to Select Speciality. Which is good! I will update once I know our next step.
