Mary’s Story

Site created on July 26, 2018

Let me start out by saying I have a very positive attitude and feel at peace with everything. In June, the nurse practitioner at my OB-GYN’s office found a lump in my left breast-much to the later amazement of my surgeons and radiologists. After a core needle biopsy, we learned that it was breast cancer. I will be having a double mastectomy on August 9th at noon.

It’s very small and slow growing. I have the same type of cancer my sister had six years ago, Invasive Mammary Carcinoma. Though I’m praying for the same outcome Elizabeth had, I know they may find more, and I may need chemo and/or radiation. Elizabeth did not need either. She’s been on a pill, Tamoxifen, for 6 years and we are hoping for the same. My daughters will help with the updates as things progress.

We have had questions about help with meals, so my daughters have added a Meal Train link here.

I appreciate your thoughts and prayers throughout my journey!
Much love,
Mary

Update: 12-31-18
Too cute not to share!!

The other day Henry and Camden’s Reeny was watching them, and Camden said, Take a picture, I look like Mamie” ❤️❤️❤️ I guess I wear my beanie around them a lot!! Reeny sent this picture of Camden with his underwear on his head like my beanie!! 😂😂😂

We had a joyous Christmas in Austin, December 21-24, with Michael, Danielle, Tripp, & Shep! We even had time for a delicious lunch at a winery in Dripping Springs. Then, we drove over to Lafayette to attend Christmas mass with Emily, Trevor, Henry, & Camden! We celebrated Christmas with the entire Judice family. 😍Christmas Day was too much fun watching the boys see what Santa brought them. ❤️We later drove to Covington to visit Trevor’s mom’s family, the Buchholzes. They always welcome us for any occasion!
We drove back to Lafayette, spent one more night there, and then we came home on the 26th. That night we enjoyed a delicious meal with my brother, Tom, and his wife, Susan. 😍

Dr. Paul Davis, the perfectionist, has been my doctor for reconstruction. My last surgery was yesterday, December 27th, and it went well. Shannon Lawhead, one of my parents, put me to sleep and made sure I didn’t get nauseated! (Y’all know I’ve been praying about that symptom.)
😳 Surgery lasted about 3 1/2 hours, so we didn’t get home till about 5:30.

We arrived home to a delicious meal that Sharon Parker delivered and a large adorable penguin that Melody Ballew painted! She even painted his scarf red, just for me. (She knows I love red!)😍

I’ve been setting my alarm religiously every four hours for my nausea and pain medications, so I haven’t had any problems! I only have two drains this time, and Caroline is helping me keep up with those. I should get them out Monday. 🤔

Sleeping has been less difficult through this entire ordeal with the pillow system Angel Camden has let me borrow. They make sleeping on my back much more manageable. 😊

I’m trying to be a good patient, but this is getting old. I’m ready to return to my fifth graders on January 8th! (I snuck in a couple of visits with them last week.)😍

I have felt your love through texts, emails, cards, and phone calls! I have made it this far with my mindset due to all of your prayers. I am truly blessed to have so many friends and family praying for me. 🙏❤️

Now, I have to take Letrozole for many years to come. I will have many doctors’ visits and tests. Please keep me on your prayer lists!

Much love! ❤️❤️❤️

Mary
