Marybeth’s Story

Site created on December 2, 2020

Dear family and friends,

Marybeth, MB, Mimi, or as Dirk affectionately refers to her, Maare, has been recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After less than 2 weeks of symptoms of abdominal pain/discomfort, she had a CT scan which revealed a large anterior pelvic mass and cancer spread throughout her abdomen. She was quickly set up with an excellent local Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. Elena Moore, at North Shore Community Hospital and goes for a biopsy and port placement on 12/4/20. Ironically this is Gigi's birthday so we know that she and many other saints are sending their love and prayers for MB.

After the biopsy, we will have a better idea of the cancer's stage. The current plan is for her to receive 3 rounds of chemotherapy starting 12/11 and spaced 21 days apart. After 9 weeks she will have another CT scan and if favorable, surgery will follow her chemotherapy induction.

We know how beloved our Mimi is and will use this space to update her journey. At this time, we pray for her and Dirk and that the initial chemotherapy treatments are effective and have minimal side effects. Thanks to an immediate outpouring from family and friends, food has rained down from above and they are set for meals for now - we will start a meal train for them at a later date as their freezer is full!

Mimi is thankful for the outpouring of love and support. This is a great place to leave an encouraging message.

"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning, great is your faithfulness."

Dear Friends and Family:

It must be Spring because Dirk is out playing a round of golf today!  We are hoping Marybeth will join him soon to take some swings using her new shoulder replacement!

She has enjoyed her new shoulder since her surgery in January.  Her orthopedic surgeon Dr Cummins was impressed with her results and how quickly she regained her mobility and strength.   Dirk and she were able to enjoy a trip to Cabo with Jean and Mike McLoone in late March with lots of rest and golfing!

Marybeth’s CT scan came back last week showing advancement of the cancer in her abdomen. We understood this might be a risk since she was off some of the immunotherapy agents around the time of surgery, but are still disappointed.  MB and Dirk met with Dr. Moore  on Monday and reviewed the latest scan.  The next step is for her to go back on a more traditional  chemotherapy, Cisplatin and Gemzar which is different than the targeted immunotherapy she has been on with potentially more side effects.  She will be getting this regimen for 2 weeks on, then 2 weeks off for the foreseeable future.

Although this is not the news we wanted to hear, we remain very positive for her recuperating powers. We pray for her continued strength in this journey and know God will be ever present with her during it.  As always, Marybeth remains a beacon of positivity and faith and inspires all of us around her to be the same.

We so appreciate each and every one of your faithful prayers.  They continue to uphold all of us during this time.  We pray all of us are renewed by Gods Re-creation this Spring  as we witness life awakening around us.

With  gratitude and love,

Team Patricia
