MaryAnn’s Story

Site created on August 25, 2018

In August 2018, MaryAnn was diagnosed with breast cancer after a yearly routine mammogram revealed an abnormality in her left breast. On August 13 she underwent a left mastectomy with reconstruction. The left breast was removed as well as some lymph nodes, some of which were also positive for cancer. MaryAnn has stage 3 triple negative breast cancer, which occurs in only 15% of breast cancers. This means the tumor was negative for the three most common receptors known to fuel breast cancer - estrogen, progesterone, and HER-2. Since the cells lack these receptors, common treatments that target these receptors such as hormone therapy are not effective. She will have to undergo chemotherapy beginning in early September for 5 months . After that, she will require radiation. It will be a long and difficult journey but she is in great hands at the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus. This site is a way to share updates about MaryAnn's recovery. We ask that people follow this site rather than contact her for updates to allow her time to rest and heal. Thank you everyone for your support through this journey!

Newest Update

Journal entry by MaryAnn Boyer

Just a quick update this morning.  I got to come home yesterday evening! There’s no place like home.  I had a good nights rest. Very sore but that will get better.  Thanks for all the texts but I wasn’t able to answer them all. It was nice but to know so many were thinking of me 💚💛
