Mark’s Story

Site created on November 4, 2019

Thank you for visiting my site. It's been a whirlwind of emotions and information overload. I don't plan to Google every little thing about my cancer but if you would like to know more Cancer.net has very good information (which my doctor shared). Sadly, I have Esophageal cancer stage 4B. It has metastasized to my liver and a lymph node. Our first goal is to shrink the lesions in my liver so we can remove the cancer.

With all the love and support I have received in these 3 short weeks, I know I can beat this.

Thank you all for thinking of me and especially my kids during this difficult time.

With all the love in my heart,
Mark

Newest Update

Journal entry by Mark Schatz

Hello everyone, It has been a while since I have updated everyone on my current status.  First, I have been working from home and quarantied for over 3 months now.  Needless to say, since I am such a people person, I believe I have lost a little bit more of my mind.  (Not that I had that much to lose...ha!)  Plus the kids are back working so staying with Margaret to keep me safe.  I am looking for a dog just to have noise here.

My major aggressive treatment has done what it can do.  The cancer spots have been shrunk as far as possible.  We have now moved to Maintenance Mode.  This is Chemo every two weeks but only one Chemo drug called 5FU (and we know what the FU stands for!!!!)  The idea of this is to keep the cancer where it is.  I will have 6 treatments then another scan to make sure it is working.  If it is working then we keep going on Maintenance Mode for.....ever, I guess.

In the meantime, I am going to go to Siteman Cancer Center (here in STL and in conjunction with Wash U.) to see if there may be another option than Maintenance Mode forever.  We will even talk Liver Transplant.  I hope we can do something else than Chemo every 2 weeks.

I will admit, this plus the COVID shit just sucks!!!  There is no end in sight, for me, until there is a real vaccine.

I want to thank everyone who continues to reach out to check on me!   I also want to say thanks to my dear friend Vikki for setting up a weekly Zoom meeting to see old friends and reminisce. (https://www.facebook.com/vikkigreenberg.levine/posts/10158460747161165)

My love to all of you!!!!
Mark
