Mark’s Story

Site created on April 5, 2023

While working in the barn, Mark fell off the loft onto gravel and a wood pallet landing on his head and shoulder from a height of 18 feet.  They had wanted to med-flight him, but the winds were too strong, so after being taken by ambulance to our local hospital, he was transferred to a Level 1 Trauma center in JC, TN. He broke and displaced nine ribs on his left side (most broken in multiple places). His clavicle was crushed and he broke portions of several vertebrae. Surgeons repaired his clavicle with a plate and nine screws. Though breathing is very difficult,  due to the broken ribs and vertabra, he decided to not have surgery to repair the ribs as it would have kept him in the ICU longer.  After 6 days in the ICU, he opted to recuperate at home.

Concerns are an erratic and elevated heart rate since the accident, infection/pneumonia, lung collapse, and of course great pain associated with breathing and movement. Because of the pain, his breathing is shallow.  This could lead to more lung collapse and pneumonia which would put him back in the hospital on a ventilator. A long recovery is expected.   Please keep him in your prayers.

Dear friends of ours set up a way for people to donate if they feel led to help with medical expenses or other unanticipated expenses while Mark is unable to work.  https://www.gofundme.com/f/3wmgru-help-in-time-of-need?utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1&utm_content=undefined&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer&utm_term=undefined

Newest Update

Journal entry by MarknAndrea Moormans

Mark continues to have a lot of pain in his ribs. His orthopedic surgeon referred him to a cardiothoracic surgeon for further evaluation.  The biggest challenge this week is related to a persistent seasonal allergy cough that Mark has developed.  Please pray for the coughing to subside as it is greatly exacerbating the pain and inflammation.

Mark also had continuous heart monitoring for two weeks and we are awaiting a follow-up appointment with the cardiologist.  Thank you for your continued prayers and encouragement.
