Mark’s Story

Site created on August 28, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.

Mark has had ongoing neck pain for 4-5 years. He’s been to chiropractic appointments and massages to no relief. He went to an orthopedic walk in clinic on August 1st, where they performed some exams and found that when they tested his reflexes, he tremors. This finding led to scheduling a MRI, which was performed a week later. On August 14th we met with a neurosurgeon in Sioux Falls, Mark was diagnosed with a Chordoma. A Chordoma is a tumor located at the base of the skull, at the top of the spine, next to the spinal chord. This is considered cancerous because it invades the tissue and bone. It’s a very rare cancer with only 300 cases in the US each year. Treatment for Chordoma is surgery and a specialized radiation that the closest place for this is Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Journal entry by Ashley Warner

Mikenna made it home this evening. It is really disappointing to know the poor care she received in the hospital the last few days. It really depleted her spirits and made the last few days even more difficult. We are all excited to have her close and get her whatever she needs! She has had a tough road recovering since Thursday, but home is usually the best medicine! We hope for rest and a qu.... I mean, smoothe week. (We don't use the Q word in this house). Feel free to send her a note of encouragement!

Mark had a decent weekend too and is feeling a little better. Hopefully we will hear on his test results soon. He is still very immuno-compromised so he is laying low to avoid extra bugs going around. Phone calls are always welcome to pass the time!
