Marisa’s Story

Site created on February 4, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement.  As you all know my Mom is a breast cancer survivor and just hit 5 years of being cancer free in October 2018.  A few weeks ago she went in for her first colonoscopy (which is recommended at the age of 50).  The doctor who performed the colonoscopy found a hiatal hernia, a polyp in her ascending colon, another polyp and a tumor in her sigmoid colon.  The polyps were removed and a biopsy was taken from the tumor to be sent to the lab.  A week later the results came back, one polyp and the tumor are malignant cancer.  She had a CT scan done a few days later to see if the cancer was anywhere else in her body.  Right now it looks like its just in her colon but we wont know for sure until after her surgery.  After meeting with a few surgeons we found one in McKinney that gained our trust right away, Dr. Smallwood.  Mom will be going in for a small procedure on February 21st and her surgery is scheduled for February 22.  Dr. Smallwood is going to remove a portion of her colon along with several lymph nodes around that area to make sure the cancer hasn't spread.  She'll be in the hospital for 6 days after surgery.  Please keep her in your prayers! I will post updates as soon as we hear anything else.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Ashley Cypert

Hey guys! I wanted to let all of you know that my mom is doing really well! Her attitude remains strong and positive. She is so driven to maintain a normal healthy life during this process. I really believe this is just apart of God’s greater plan for her and our family! The pathology result came back and some of the lymph nodes that were removed are cancerous. As a result she will need chemo every other week for six months. She did have a PET scan done to see if there is cancer anywhere else in her body, we’re still waiting on those results. Keep the prayers and support coming! She is one strong woman and we know that God is in control! Love you guys! I’ll post again as soon as we get any updates.
