Maria’s Story

Maria Weinberger - Wife, Mother, Gramma, Sister and Friend.  Read on for updates about her battle with lung cancer...

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.  Ephesians 3:20

It's funny how life can change in an instant.  One day Mom is dealing with what seemed to be a pulled muscle and the next she is in radiation treatment for lung cancer.  OK, maybe that's not so funny, it's yucky actually...

In the summer of 2008, Mom noticed she was having some chest pain when carrying around her grandson, Anders.  A couple of doctor visits revealed nothing.  No big deal right?  Fast forward to Christmas 2008 and the pain is still there.  Not terribly bad, just annoying.  More tests revealed no problems - just a muscle issue.  Nothing a little rest, massage and therapy couldn't fix.  It didn't fix it though.

In June of 2009, Mom went to the doctor again and an MRI and CT scan were ordered to help get some better answers.  No worries, we thought,  the scans will show nothing and we'll know it's a muscle thing.  Then comes the first phone call.  It wasn't just a muscle thing.  There were a few spots on her spine and one in her lung that required more investigation so a biopsy was ordered.  On Thursday, June 4th, we get the second phone call.  The biopsy results showed lung cancer.  Since it's already spread to her bones, the official diagnosis is Stage IV Adenocarcinoma.

In your head, you think, "How can this be?  This happens to other people.  Lung cancer happens to people who smoke."  Only it is real, it is happening and it doesn't matter if you've smoked or not.

And so the journey begins.  But this won't be a story of merely dealing with cancer but a story of embracing life.  This will be a story of family and friendship and joy in spite of it all; a story of smiling in the face of adversity - for we know that our promise rests in salvation through Jesus Christ.  Most of all, this will be a story of unfailing faith in a Mighty God that strengthens and provides...

Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.

Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give you thanks,
and praise your glorious name.
1 Chronicles 29:11-13

Journal entry by Dion Weinberger

Hello all,

We are going to be celebrating Mom's life on Saturday, September 29th, 2018. There is a visitation at 10:00am with the service starting at 11:30am. Mom's favorite meal will follow; no ham sandwiches and potato salad this time - we'll be dining on taco-in-a-bag!

This is going to be an amazing tribute filled with Jesus, memories, and worship music - Prairie Heights style of course! A very special thanks to our Prairie Heights Church family for making this possible - you have been and always will be a blessing!

We'd love to share this day with you!
