Margaret’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Here is how the story begins...Margaret began having pain in her back and under her shoulder blades the week of July 4th.  She was eventually referred back to her doctor for an xray to check for a compression fracture in her back or herniated disc.  They thought the pain was from muscles in her back.  The symptoms persisted and she also became short of breath.  She returned to the doctor on August 29 and they did an xray.  They started treating her for what they thought was pneumonia.  Despite 5 days of antibiotics, she wasn't improving.  She returned to the doctor on Sept 4 (her birthday) and was given an inhaler and had IM antibiotics for 3 days.  Her shortness of breath increased and eventually she went to the Emergency Department in New Prague on Saturday, Sept .  After an extensive workup, it was found that Margaret had a large pleural effusion in her right lung.  She made the decision to be transferred to Rochester St Marys.

The fluid was drained early on Sunday morning.  After that she had a CT scan of her chest.  The CT showed a mass in her right lung.  On Sunday evening she went into an irregular heart rhythm, which landed her in a cardiac unit.  On Monday, she had a bronchoscopy (scope into her lung) in order to get a biopsy.  She became very short of breath after the procedure and landed herself in the ICU (room #3, if you're counting).

On Sept 12, we were informed that mom has small cell lung cancer.  She has had and extensive workup and is surrounded by a wonderful care team here in Rochester.  On Thursday, Sept 13, Margaret was transferred to Rochester Methodist to begin chemotherapy.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Anne Anderson

With heavy hearts we announce mom's passing.  She was determined to fight this beast, and fight it she did - right until the end.  While we are sad to have her go, we are certain that dad came to meet her and we find comfort in knowing that they are together again.

We cannot thank you all enough for all the kind words and acts and for all the thoughts and prayers sent both to mom and to us.  We are certain that your prayers got her through the toughest of days on this path that was laid before her.  We are also grateful for all the angels on earth, disguised as caregivers in one way or another, that were placed on our path as well.  And to all of you who took care of mom in any way through this, we are deeply grateful.

Though the days ahead will be tough, we look forward to celebrating her life here on earth and her reunion with dad.  We know they are watching down over us, together again.
