The recovery process continues! Maren's persistence in continuing physical therapy and hydrotherapy has gotten her back to more normal activities. Though the exercises get mundane, we are amazed at Maren's stamina to keep at them.  She gradually progresses in muscle strengthening and balance, which are goals for the rest of the year. The headaches linger from day to day and she needs to break from reading and writing, yet she won't give up on what brings her so much fulfillment.

The flexibility in her thumb, hand, arm and elbow has returned completely...just in time to schedule a surgery in August to have the plates and screws removed!  X-rays show the bones are healing well, but the metal in her arm is in a position which makes it very uncomfortable and painful on a regular basis. Having it removed before the start of school in the fall will hopefully require just a couple weeks of keeping the incision dry (back to showering with plastic bags!) and later, scar mobilization.  The flexibility and strength should not be affected, except that she may be able to make it stronger more easily without the obstacle of protruding hardware running the length of her forearm.

The plan for her ankle is simple at this point - keep it moving and keep icing! It's getting stronger every day, and Maren looks forward to being able to run and hike again. Between hydrotherapy and Stairmaster at the Y, she's determined to gain back what she lost.  As I write this, she is enjoying the great outdoors at Custer State Park in SD with dear friends who are a constant support.  Don't think much hiking is in the cards this trip, but all in good time!

It's been both a short and long 5 months since Maren's accident. What has been confirmed in the past months is that God is in control and has a plan, and it's perfect.  What's also true is that we always have something to be grateful for no matter the circumstances.  People we've never met have been praying for Maren and want the best for her. It is hard to put in words the gratitude Maren and our family have for the love and concern, and the numerous acts of kindness expressed during these last months. To each of you who so generously donated, brought over a meal, sent cards, letters, and gifts, and prayed incessantly, we  thank you.
