Marc’s Story

Site created on June 21, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

A few years ago, Marc began to struggle to walk. We found out that he had a case of drop foot. However, the cause was unknown. While Marc struggled to do short walks around the block and could no longer run, his one favorite activity was not significantly hampered: golf. However, over time Marc's condition worsened. After months of tests and differing opinions from doctors, Marc was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. While this is not the diagnosis anyone wants to hear, Marc is approaching his fight with relentless positivity and courage. Please join us in your support for Marc.

Journal entry by Mary Williams

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

– Paulo Coelho

Fr. Patrick Peyton, C.S.C. said, “The family that prays together, stays together.” You are all part of our family, and our prayers have been answered! Marc returned home on Tuesday. During his stay, there were times when the future felt very bleak. But, God heard your calls and gave Marc the strength to overcome and make his journey back home. The power of prayer is real, and you are all living proof. We cannot thank you enough.

While we are overjoyed for Marc to return home, we now must adapt and overcome, again. This ordeal changed Marc and his needs forever. The hospice team significantly increased the volume and variety of his medication. This means that he will now require 24 hour assistance. This is not an easy transition to make for anyone. However, we are doing our best to create a new routine, and Marc’s spirits have never been higher. Even though our living room and kitchen have now become a pseudo-hospital, we are approaching every challenge with a positive mental attitude, the only way Marc knows how.

Please continue your prayers for Marc. They make more of an impact than you could ever know.

Love,

Mary
