Welcome to Maia’s CaringBridge Site
Sign In to Show Your SupportLast night, Maia was finally able to complete the sleep study she needed to pass to be able to get her trach out.
Unfortunately, and to our surprise, she did not pass this important milestone. This means she is not a candidate to have her trach removed at this time.
The result showed that she has obstructive sleep apnea when she isn't using her trach; basically, she stops breathing roughly 13 times an hour.
The next step is to have a sleep state endoscopy, which is an airway scope where they slowly put Maia to sleep while their camera is in place. This will allow her team to figure out what is preventing her from breathing safely while sleeping. After this scope, they will be able to recommend further procedures to correct the obstruction.
This obviously is not what we wanted to hear, but setbacks are inevitable with medically complex kids, so we will just keep following the recommendations of our team and keep praying that next time will be the time!
