Maggie’s Story

Site created on November 19, 2022

Welcome to Maggie’s Caring-bridge Website! Not to be dramatic but it’s easier to post all in one location versus texts, snaps, phone calls and etc. Maggie is our furr kid, she is our whole world and will be 4 on 11/22/22.

Wednesday (11/16/22) night she ran agility not only for mom but dad too. It was perfect she did 12 weaves, did her jumps ran like a champ. Thursday (11/17/2022) morning she was a little slow moving and slower eating but mom didn’t think anything of it. Afternoon rolled around and Maggie was not doing good at all. She didn’t want any cheese, no ice cream and no food. Her poops were not normal at all. It was decided she was going to the vet the next morning.

Friday (11/18/2022) morning Maggie was brought into Access Urgent care and spent the entire day from 9:30 till 6:30 pm trying to figure out what was going on. She got multiple blood tests, urine samples, stool samples and an X-ray. Maggie was officially diagnosed with Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP).

Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMTP) is a serious and sometimes life-threatening auto-immune condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys a patient’s platelets, putting the patient at risk of spontaneous bleeding. Basically her body is attacking its own immune system by destroying platelets.

Maggie’s counts were at basically 0 Friday and a normal count should be over 150,000. Her red blood cell count was normal so no need for a blood transfusion. But something needed to happen. It was discussed whether to send Maggie home or 24 hour care to have her basically babysat so she doesn’t bleed and not have it stop. For Maggie’s comfort and our own she was brought home to relax and rest comfortably.

Saturday morning (11/18/2022), Maggie made it through the night no issues not that mom slept at all. She wouldn’t eat but was drinking. We gave her all her morning meds and within a half hour she puked them all up. Sorry auntie Heidi about your car. Away we went to the vet to have them look over her for the day. She received fluids, iv antibiotics, blood work and an X-ray to confirm no internal bleeding.

Now we play the game of waiting and see what her body does. She is on 7 different medications to hopefully help everything including two antibiotics and a steroid. Currently she is not eating anything but hopes that will change in the next coming days.

I read things on the internet of course I do and talk to our fellow vet friend. This is totally curable and may be a life long thing which is no big deal we can handle this. She just may need an extra vet appointment here or there to keep an eye on the platelet count to hopefully catch something before it goes south.

Thank you all for the ongoing love and support and fingers crossed this journey we are in will end in a good result.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jenny Slaughter

It has been a hot minute since our last update, to be honest there is not update. Maggie has been doing nothing but amazing! She is off the prednisone completely and is only on her immunosuppression medication to use it up, it is only every other day at a low dose. After a long discussion with our vet and other vets and vet staff we officially are going through with her immunizations. Immunizations are tricky because it could cause a re-trigger of an attack. Not that we need to justify our choice but Maggie is very active in the dog world and we live in Minnesota where our backyard backs up to a creek.....Our plan starts on Monday with one immunization a month, with a close eye on her. She is back into her dog sports and we are waiting for the snow to melt so we can use our backyard for more agility practice. We try to balance our time for us and her, who would of thought being a dog parent would be so rewarding. Thank you for all those who sent us love and prayers during one of the toughest times of our lives. To those who donated to our Go Fund me and our medical bills thank you from the bottom of our hearts, it truly was a Christmas miracle. Thank you isn't enough for the kind things that people have said and done for us. Our hearts are full and give your fur babies a little extra love from us.
