Maggie’s Story

Site created on July 13, 2023

Welcome to our CaringBridge website for Maggie Grace. This is Lexi and Sara, Maggie's best friends from high school. We know so many people love and care about Maggie and she does not want to leave anyone in the dark throughout her journey. However, Maggie, Daren and their immediate family will be prioritizing her healing and recovery and are not able to respond to all of those reaching out in love and support.  She is joyfully overwhelmed by all of the love and encouragement she has received so far and will continue to need it as this is just the beginning of a very difficult journey.  We are in close contact with Maggie so you will find the most up to date information on her here. She will also be able to see all of your correspondences in one place!

Maggie was recently diagnosed with Stage IIIA2 Ovarian Granulosa Cell Tumor. This is a rare type of Ovarian Cancer that is typically slow growing with good prognosis. Surgery alone is usually sufficient as cases are commonly confined to one ovary. In Maggie's case, there was involvement with her omentum (fold of peritoneum that connects the stomach with order abdominal organs) which can be common with Ovarian Cancers.

Due to the Stage IIIA2 diagnosis, Maggie's oncologists decided the best treatment for her would involve surgery + chemotherapy. Maggie had surgery on June 26th to remove her left ovary and her omentum. Since then, she has been recovering and prepping for her first cycle of chemotherapy which will start on July 31st. Her treatment regimen will occur every 21 days for 6 cycles and consists of paclitaxel and carboplatin plus additional supportive care medications. She will have a port for her infusions. Her days at the infusion center will be long (~7 hours in length) so she is looking for activities that she can do while she is confined to her infusion chair. Maybe she will finally be able to finish a book! :)

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us (Lexi and Sara). We will be posting updates here as we receive them. We just ask that you please respect Maggie and Daren's privacy at this time so that they can focus on the long road ahead.

Thank you all in advance for all of your love and support for our girl! We appreciate you all more than you know!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Sara Fahringer

Hello All!

Just wanted to give everyone an update on our girl! If you ordered Round 2 of Team Maggie gear you all should have received your order! Please let us (Lexi, Sara or Jackie) know if you did not receive your order and we will look into it! Cycle 5 of chemotherapy went smoothly. Maggie's new port worked and the day at the infusion center was uneventful which was very nice for a change. Maggie had a pretty tough treatment week (side effect wise) but at this point in her treatment, she knows what to expect and when to expect it so that has been helpful. And if you are reading this then you know that Maggie won't let chemotherapy weeks keep her down for long. She gets her body moving even when she doesn't feel like it because she firmly believes that movement is medicine.

We are quickly approaching Cycle 6 which is Maggie's LAST ROUND OF CHEMOTHERAPY! Definitely something to celebrate and this is a date we have all been anxiously awaiting since June. Last treatment is scheduled for Monday, November 13th so seems like a perfect day to wear your Team Maggie gear! Please post a picture of yourself in your gear and tag Maggie (@marymargaretgrace or @gracetraining) to show your support. Let's get our girl to the finish line!

I will be sure to keep you all updated on how Cycle 6 goes. As always, thank you all for everything you have done and continue to do for Maggie, Daren and Nellie. This whole process has been a rollercoaster and there is no way that they could have gotten through it without all of your love and support.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!
