Newest Update

Journal entry by Amanda Schmitt

It’s been a little bit since the last update on Lyric.  In general, he’s doing good.  Hair is growing, getting stronger, eating and drinking on his own without needing supplemental feedings via his machine at night, and using the potty on his own about 99% of the time.  He has his days/moments where he still doesn’t feel very good, and will rest in bed, but far less frequent then it has been since he started treatment.  We’ve had a few hiccups here and there, one involving his NG being accidentally pulled out while playing with brother, and another incident that involved one of Lyrics loose teeth ripping open his gum.  All of which have been sorted out and taken care of now.

Today started “Cycle 3 of Maintenance” where he was sedated, got a spinal tap/chemo injected into his spine, accessed through his port for another chemo via IV, and started 5days of steroids at home.  It was a rough, long visit in general.  He struggled with it.

It’s great to not have to go to the children’s hospital as often, but I do think that contributes to the visits being harder for him.

Lyric gets one chemo at home daily right now, and another chemo once a week at home.  That lasts for the remainder of his treatment.  Other than that, and the steroids (roughly once a month for 5 days at a time), he doesn’t get too many other meds.

There are 12 weeks in each cycle.  Every 4 weeks he has a clinical visit at the children’s hospital for chemo treatments through his port and/or spinal tap/chemo injected into his spine.  4 weeks from now, he will get his last ‘5 day in a row’ chemo treatment through his port via IV.  4 weeks after that he will get one chemo treatment through his port and 5 days of steroids, which will end the 3rd cycle of maintenance.  After that, it will be a lot more repetitive/even less visits, as he won’t have to do the 5 day in a row chemo  treatments ever again after this next one happens in May.

As always, thank you to all who continue to check on us, and send love and support.  It is always noticed and very much appreciated!
