Journal entry by John Unflat — May 23, 2020

Thank you all for following Lynn's struggle and for your prayers and support.  This morning at 10:25 am Lynn went to be with Jesus and her Dad and extended family in Heaven.  Her three daughters, Alli, Alex and Ava and our future son in law, Travis were there.  She went peacefully.  Her cancer was Stage IV when diagnosed.  It was Peritoneal Carcinomatosis of Unknown origin.  The cell type was adenocarcinoma and most likely originated in her small bowel, but they were never sure.  It spread to her liver and all over the surface of her abdomen before it was ever diagnosed.  She never wanted to hear how bad it was, just that there was a chance.  Dr. Blakely of the NIH-NCI (National Cancer Institute) reviewed her case.  Her cells were very aggressive (and lacked clinical markers for targeted treatment) and no clinical trials were available.  He said it was found too late and even if she had a CT Scan when she first had GI signs it had already spread.  We are all very sad but happy that she is no longer in pain and with her savior Jesus Christ.  She said she was not afraid to die.  She just didn't want to leave us on our own.  My goal is to make sure her wishes for our girls happen and that I maintain all her friendships.  She was the love of my life and will miss her immensely.  I know many of you will too.  Let this be a lesson for us all to never take what you have for granted and enjoy the here and now

From April 22 when site started:

Hello friends and family, we will be using this platform to share updates on Lynn's process through her recovery. Thank you for all the love and support you have sent so far.
On April 6, 2020 Lynn was up all night with what we thought was food poisoning, she became severely dehydrated to the point that John drove her to the hospital.  The GI signs did not resolve, so after many lab tests and a CT scan last week on April 16, the doctors were concerned for possible cancer in her abdomen.  She was referred to Dr. Beth Hellerstedt, an Oncologist in Round Rock.

She has not been able to drink nor eat since last Thursday.  She had fluid in her abdomen around her organs causing pain.  After the fluid was drained, Lynn had an MRI and they found multiple concerning issues, including thickening in her GI tract.  The fluid analysis also found cancer cells in her abdomen.  The diagnosis is secondary Peritoneal Carcinomatosis, although they have not yet discovered the primary cancer. Along with other tests we found she has Crohn's disease. We will provide an update when we know more and plan on getting a second opinion.

Lynn was transferred April 22 from St David’s in Round Rock to St. David’s on 32 Street and is now the patient of Dr. Wiatrek, an Oncological Surgeon and Dr. Chell a specialist in GI issues.  They are continuing to try to determine her primary cancer, so that they can determine the appropriate chemotherapy.  They are not able to do surgery until she has several courses of chemo.  We will provide an update as soon as we know more.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic we are unable to be with Lynn due to strict hospital regulations. She is confused and stressed severely from the uncertainty, the pain and lack of sleep and absence of our company.  She can not talk to everyone and needs lots of rest. Please do not ask her all about her condition and plan.   We have passed on all your well wishes and prayers to her.  Lynn appreciates all your prayers, good thoughts, and can not wait till she can come home to her family.

Thank you for your concerns and prayers.

Sincerely, the Unflat family

Journal entry by John Unflat

Friends, I come to you with a heavy but thankful heart. Thankful for the privilege and blessing to have known my dear friend Lynn Unflat. As many of you know, Lynn recently passed away to the despair of all of us that knew her and to the heartbreak of her husband John and her 3 lovely daughters, Alli, Alex, and Ava. A Memorial Trust for the benefit of the Unflat Family was created. Lynn loved and gave with an open heart and her daughters were the light of her day. I write to you now to ask you to consider donating to this memorial trust to honor Lynn - her friendship, her kindness and her love. Any donations can be made payable to the Lynn Unflat Memorial Trust and can be sent directly to BB&T Bank, Hill Country Galleria, 12301 Bee Cave Parkway, Austin 78738-6383. Donations can also be sent directly to John to deposit there. “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. For all that we love deeply becomes forever a part of us.” (Unknown Author) Lynn will forever be a part of us. Peace be with you all. (Marina Bird)
