Lynn’s Story

Site created on June 9, 2022

Welcome to our Caring Bridge site. My mom was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a type of blood cancer. We will use this site to keep family and friends updated and appreciate your prayers, support, and words of hope and encouragement.

ABOUT MULTIPLE MYELOMA
Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer in which plasma cells grow out of control and crowd out other types of blood cells, such as
·        Red blood cells (RBCs) - carry oxygen throughout or body
·        White blood cells (WBCs) - which fight infection
·        Platelets (Plt) - help with blood clotting
In addition, an overgrowth of plasma cells can weaken and damage bones causing fractures or lesions.
Plasma cells are important because they help fight infections and other diseases. These cells are primarily found in the bone marrow (the middle part of the bone).

HOW THEY DISCOVERED HER CANCER
Many years ago, they discovered that my mom had low platelets, a condition called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia (ITP), which caused her to bleed and bruise easier. She has routine blood work to monitor her platelet levels, and during a regular check, they discovered her blood counts were out of whack. So she had further testing, including a bone marrow biopsy, which confirmed her cancer diagnosis.

There currently isn't a cure for Multiple Myeloma, but several treatment options are available, and many more are currently under research. My mom has received treatment (VRd) since January 2022 in preparation for a transplant later this summer.

Journal entry by Tina Lonsky

The surgery went well.  They fused her spine bones from C2-T2 together (see photo below) and opened the hole in the center of the bones to relieve pressure off her spinal cord (the blue dot in the image below represents the spinal cord).   She is in a lot of pain, but they told her to expect that and that they would do their best to help control it.  Kenadee spent the night with her and said despite the pain; she is still getting up and walking/moving.  The surgeon also visualized a lesion and did a biopsy.  We are still waiting for those results.  That is all for now.
