Journal entry by Emily Hopkins-Schumacher —
Hello everyone,
Big news--after 76 days, my mom was discharged from the hospital today and is back at home! We are celebrating that she is moving on to the next step in her journey.
She will continue to receive therapy two to three days a week to help her get physically and cognitively stronger. Physical therapy will focus on improving her balance (while she can walk without a walker for some distances, it's recommended that she continues to use one for now) and making sure that she has the strength to get up in case of a fall. Occupational and speech therapies will focus on improving her memory, organization skills, and executive function skills. We are so happy with the progress she's made so far and have hope for continued improvement.
Every brain injury is different, but if you are interested in learning more about TBIs, I'd recommend checking out these resources: https://www.braininjury101.org/details, https://www.flintrehab.com/severe-brain-injury/, and https://www.flintrehab.com/category/traumatic-brain-injury/life-after-tbi/
We are thankful for all the hospital staff and the care they showed at every level. We are also grateful to our church family for their help with gathering the equipment she needs to be successful at home, along with coordinating a Meal Train.
We will continue to update as my mom hits certain milestones. As always, thank you for your prayers and support.
