Newest Update

Journal entry by Luke & Beka Hemken

Good evening friends.

Sorry for the tardy update. We have focused on being home since this morning and I couldn’t steal away until now. Luke was discharged this morning around 9:30, praise the Lord! Everything looked good and he was eager to get home. We even got to have a little family coffee shop date at a cute place called Rustica Bakery & Cafe in Edina. It was a sweet time to just hang out and revel in the mercy of God to have such a straight-forward, uneventful surgery. I keep telling friends who ask: “It’s crazy how easy this feels compared to the nightmare his abdominal surgery was.”

The straight-forwardness, however, does not diminish the fact that he is still recovering from surgery. So far he has only been taking Tylenol. We are thankful for that, but it is a challenge to get the timing right. The doctors advised him against ibuprofen as possible because they don’t want him to thin his blood. He still has some blood in his urine, and I think they want that healing process to take place before he would use anything that could potentially cause more bleeding. So, where you would normally alternate pain medication, he can only take Tylenol/Acetaminophen based meds. Unfortunately because of this, he is just going to bed now in pain and unable to take pain meds until 2am. Please pray for him to drift off to sleep with a good nights rest ahead of him.

Overall we are so thankful. To be home, for a great result, for an optimistic outlook, and for God’s mercy to be so clear. Thank you all for your prayers. Please continue to pray for healing and that the pain would subside. Pray also for us to look to Christ in the midst for mercy and grace in time of need. Finally, pray for my heart to eagerly serve my family. I can be tempted to pity myself when Luke has a 2 week lift restriction, leaving all of both his and Henry’s care in my hands. But God’s grace is sufficient and his power is perfect in my weakness. And Jesus humbled himself to the point of death. It is nothing for him to ask me to humble myself to the point of loving and serving my family when they need me most. So please pray for strength for myself to love with compassion and intention.

Thank you for being here with us and loving us ❤️ I want to post an update soon related to his most recent trip down to Mayo. They have a plan they hope will work in regards to his calcium levels. AAANNNDD….there is a likely answer to our year+ of infertility 😭🙌. But, that will have to wait until next time. Enjoy some photos from today in the meantime. Love you all! Goodnight.
