Journal entry by Megan James

Lucas had a successful surgery on Wednesday. We are still waiting for the results of the bone marrow biopsy. The lumbar puncture was completed, hopefully for the last time. The old Broviac line was removed and a new one was placed. It's a little more toward the center of his chest and less in his armpit, so hopefully the dressing will stay on. The surgeon was concerned about fluid draining out of the wound from the old line and recommended that the gauze be changed every other day. This would require changing the entire dressing. There was a lot of back and forth with oncology about that. Ultimately, he went back to the clinic on Friday to have everything cleaned and re-dressed. They decided that he should be ok until Tuesday when he goes back again. We were told to call in if we noticed any seeping from the wound.

Of course, we noticed some. This morning there was an additional tiny spot on the dressing. The on call doctor said that a little bit was ok, but to call back if there was more or if the dressing starts to lift. So far it's ok, but it's not helping the anxiety level. Our main concern is avoiding any kind of infection this close to transplant. His pain has been manageable and improving each day. We're taking it one day at a time!
