Journal entry by Annette Gonzalez

We have a stinker on our hands! Which we already knew but man oh man! When I called to check on Luca in the middle of the night, his nurse told me he ripped his tube out of his mouth! Just full on extubated himself! The doctor decided to roll with it and give it a shot on another type of breathing support called a SiPap. It is still connected to the ventilator so it still gives him breaths/helps him breathe. They warned us there is still a chance of reintubation depending on how his lungs do. When we came in to see him today we got a nice surprise that we could hold him! His arterial line was removed after the tube came out so a combination of those allow us to hold him! Only one of us could hold him and only for an hour so I hogged him first! I learned how to transfer him onto my chest and we did skin to skin. Best feeling! He did not tolerate his feedings today so increase in food. They will start to work with him on sucking s pacifier so that he knows that things going into his mouth will bring pleasure. Because of the tube he had down his throat they don’t want him to associate anything that goes into his mouth as a bad thing.
