Larry’s Story

Site created on June 21, 2020

Welcome to Larry’s CaringBridge site created for our beloved families and friends.

Larry bad a major GI bleed over a period of days that was difficult to treat because of his other health problems. After a day in ICU where he suffered greatly, we elected to pursue only palliative care. He is now at Ava House Hospice in Sioux Falls and his days will be short.

Because of FKN COVID, he can only have two guests per day, me and one of our children., but we wanted to be in touch with you and will post  regular updates. We also hope you will use this site to stay in touch with us.

Journal entry by Betty Smith

I’ve been enjoying retelling all the stories this week with our children as we each say goodbye to Larry in our own way.

Thank you to Jessi Hanson for coming up with the idea of a mini park downtown Vermillion dedicated to Larry’s mission of advocating cycling as a way of fostering health, happiness, and community. We have been talking about a mural of Larry Smith riding his Catrike into the clouds, a cycling themed sculpture, and a cycling map. If you would like to donate to the park, you can do so here:

Recycle 605 is a Vermillion area 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting cycling by giving bikes to kids.
