Joe saw Dr. Hugec, the oncologist, on Friday, April 1. We were very impressed with his professionalism and his knowledge. We felt better to learn more about this disease and what can be done about it. He was very thorough and explained all of our treatment options for this aggressive type of prostate cancer that has metastasized in the bones. We decided to be aggressive with treatment as well, so Joe will begin chemotherapy the week of April 12. He will have 6 cycles of chemo every three weeks to begin, and then follow up with oral and injected medications. The doctor explained several side effects, such as hair loss, loss of taste, and tingling in the fingers and toes, but offered several tips to help decrease those effects. One tip Joe was particularly excited about was to drink a beer before a meal to increase the flavor of the meal. It made us all laugh and was a great break from the difficult conversation we were having. We will be returning to Florida on Tuesday, invited and encouraged by our good friends who own a house there, for some serious relaxation before this rollercoaster of a journey begins. We love you all and appreciate the kind words and prayers sent our way. Please keep them coming.
