Louie & Arlow’s Story

Site created on January 22, 2022

On January 21st Louie and Arlow Nelson were born at 24 weeks and 6 days. Louie weighed 1 lb 4 Oz and was 11.8 inches. Arlow weighed 1 lb 8 Oz and was 12 inches long.  We were at the Duluth Clinic for a scheduled appointment and I was having contractions, they decided to check me and I was dilating. They rushed us to Labor and Deleiver and soon after that I was fully dilated and went in for an emergency c-section. The boys were born strong, and have a long long road ahead of them in the NICU.  I (Mom) is also recovering very well.

Both boys are getting help to stay warm, breath, regulate blood pressure, eat and much more. We have been told to expect alot of ups and downs through this but they have a fighting chance. And with God on their side anything is possible.

Newest Update

Journal entry by TroyAnn Nelson

It has been one of the busiest weeks! We had two separate trips to the cities last week, with multiple appointments in between! And we have been trying to enjoy as much time out at our land as we can!

LOUIE UPDATES:
• Louie will be having an evaluation on Friday April 12th with the Intensive Feeding Program at Lifescape in Sioux Falls SD. The plan is for our family to relocate down there for the duration of his treatment either the end of July or the month of August. Louie will have 4 appointments a day, 5 days a week. They will have a team of a Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, NP, Behavioral Health Therapist, and a GI Doctor all working together on the different pieces of Louie’s disorder. The hope is that it will help Louie understand that eating can be enjoyable. And that we can start the process of weaning Louie off his G-Tube. We will get exact dates for his Intensive after his evaluation!
• We will be having a benefit for Louie on July 13th to help pay for the medical and travel expenses of our trip to South Dakota. We will be staying at an Air BnB for 4+ weeks, and Brandon will not be working for the duration of our stay. I will post the flyer in the photos of this post! You can find more details there!
• We also saw Louie new neurologist last week. We were finally able to go over his MRI from last July. She was very helpful and cared a lot about Louie’s care! ❤️ She said she believes Louie has a mild form of Cerebral Palsy. This is causing his walking/balance issues and could be contributing to his eating difficulties. We will continue to follow with her every 6 months to see how Louie continues to develop.
• Louie also got fitted for his ankle brace this week as well! They decided he only needed a brace of his left ankle with a sole insert on the right foot. This should improve his walk and his balance! Hopefully those will come in the next week or two!

As always our family is blown away by the amount of love and support we get from family, friends, and even strangers! This would be so much harder without the help of you all holding us up!
