Lori’s Story

Site created on April 17, 2024

Welcome to Lori’s CaringBridge page – a place to stay updated, lend your love and support, and if you know Lori well, laugh a little during this tough road ahead.

Lori’s story started in high school in 1987 when she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and while with the help of St Jude in Memphis she kicked its butt, there were some long-term complications of the radiation to her neck/chest area.

In 2015, Lori went in for a simple procedure to have her esophagus stretched and ended up in the ICU with a perforation that scared us all but now she knew, this wasn’t something to have done again without extreme caution. In 2017, Lori suffered a heart attack and was blessed to have her daughter Riley there who made sure she quickly got to hospital where Lori’s strength and our prayers pulled her through that.

In 2018, Lori married her soulmate Brad Becker and blended a family of Lori’s daughters Kindyl and Riley and Brad’s sons, Brady and Drew. Brad has been Lori’s strength, best friend, calming presence and biggest fan and supporter as she tackles what comes at her from a health perspective.

As many of you know, Lori was at Mayo at the end of March where they stretched her throat and ensured they could dilate and get a camera down her esophagus, and it was a success!

This all leads to this month where Lori is now in need of heart surgery including coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve replacement & as a precaution for future problems remove a portion of the pericardium. This will be done at Mayo in Minnesota on April 25 by one of the top surgeons in the USA!

Because to know Lori is to love her, her personality, her sense of humor, her positive outlook on life, and how much she cares about others, I knew others would want to be updated on this journey.

I’ll do my best to keep you all updated, with the help of Brad, at surgery time and on the road to recovery after that for the next few months.

Journal entry by Lori Becker

Thank you for the continued prayers and the overwhelming love and support!

I am home resting and really have enjoyed the nice Illinois weather - most of you know sunshine makes me smile!

The new valve seems to be in place - now focusing on my chronic heart failure will be key.  My heart attack in 2017 put quite a strain on my heart and the damage is permanent.  This is not new news to me.

The severity of the valve caused more strain on my heart muscle which did not help things. The new valve should lift the strain of the overworking pumping heart which should prolong /delay further heart damage. Mayo will experiment medication changes to improve heart efficiencies. This will take several months to achieve medication goal. The challenge is I already have low blood pressure and most of the medications also lower BP.

For now, my goal is to minimize stress, rest, adapt to life-style changes with Coumadin (warfarin), begin cardiac rehab and manage medication changes with my blood pressure.

I want to thank ALL of my friends and family for All the love, prayers and support.

Thanks again to Christy Danko for providing updates on CaringBridge with my recent health journey chapter.

So for now…. Take time to call someone to let them know you are thinking of them, take time to smile at others, continue to be kind and most importantly Live Life!
