Newest Update

Journal entry by Briana Joslin-Guzman

It's been a while since we updated Lola's CaringBridge, mostly because there hasn't been anything to update. About 6 weeks ago, Lola started having weird eye movements, issues with her eyes having different pupil dilations, and droopiness of her left eye again. This has led us to see an ophthalmologist and repeat her EEG. It has been a little stressful with many calls to the on-call Neurologist.

Today was her ophthalmology appointment.  Lola was a trooper.  She did have to have her eyes dilated, and it was a real struggle with her severe adverse emotional reaction to water and anything wet. We managed to get her eyes dilated, though, so a thorough exam could occur. That being said, we left the office with a new diagnosis and eventual surgery in the future on Lola's eyes.  Lola has been diagnosed with superior oblique palsy with inferior oblique overaction.  This is pretty common with kiddos that have Leukoencephalopathy. Essentially, she has muscle weakness in her eye.  There isn't anything they can do about it other than surgery.  At this point, it isn't affecting her vision, although it is progressive and will eventually affect it. When her eyes start having issues with seeing things, she will have eye surgery and probably need glasses.  We hope it will be a slow progression, but we must follow up in a year to check.

Not the update I wanted to make, but it is what it is. We will keep on truckin' on and Lola will continue to be a light in our lives just as she always has been.  She is exactly who she is meant to be.
