Newest Update

Journal entry by cindy smith

Since our last update, Lindsay has just completed her first full week at a Rehabilitation Hospital.  Although she was there around the holidays, progress was interrupted by trips back to Beth Isreal due to hydrocephalus.  Presently she expresses herself perfectly.  Due to the stroke, she's had to learn to swallow again and has now progressed to purees, yet remains on a feeding tube.  Her core strength is improving as is her left leg needed for walking.  She is up to 48 assisted steps in PT.  Her left arm is very weak. Mostly she is bed ridden.  She is down to 98 pounds which Lindsay is happy about as she wants to be a 4th on Jud's Etchells  programs.  Her spirits vary; She's incredibly sad that her body doesn't work properly and her life is in a hospital bed.  However, she can also laugh and joke when distracted from the reality.

The hospital team (insurance) is wanting to send her home to our house as she'll need constant care for awhile.  I foresee this happening by late February. She will require daily outpatient therapies. This will be a nice change for her as she'll be able to see more friends.  Hospitals only allow 1 visitor a day between 2 and 8pm. I've insisted on the feeding tube being removed by then.

Jud and I are touched by the concern and support we are getting from the sailing community even though I don't always respond.  It's nice to know our Australian friends are selling the Fierce Mermaid stickers that Bill Mann made and Kenny organized.   We are incredibly grateful to Lindsays friends who visit with her which has allowed Jud and I to visit our new grand daughter, Coco or race in Florida.

Although recovery will take time, we are quite optimistic as her cognitive skills remain good.
