Linda’s Story

Site created on September 1, 2023

Where to start? I read other people’s Caring Bridge updates, but never would have guessed I’d be writing one for me. I’ve been healthy, pretty much never seeing a doctor or taking meds. Then in June, for a fairly minor issue, a pulmonologist did a large lab work up. She calls the next day & says we have major problems with my blood. Really. She got me started toward seeing a hematologist/oncologist(A cancer doctor doesn’t sound like me). That date got moved up. Within a short time I’m told I have MDS, with no cure possible and a life expectancy of 1-3 years, getting into chemo immediately, which needs to be continued till death. I was also told I was not a candidate for a bone marrow transplant because I was too old.

Interesting. If you know me, you know
I have a mindset to rise above hardships, and now I have an opportunity to live out the principles of my book, Mindset Choices. I’m into miracles with the power of prayer. I believe in sovereignty—God knows, decides, and has all power. He does tell us to pray, which many of you have joined me doing.

Immediately a lot of God pieces have “fallen into place.” Everything is a long story and very multifaceted. Through my brother and his wife connections with MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston started. Then immediately I got started with Scripps MD Anderson in the San Diego area through a friend, located close to my sister and her husband.

Family agreed to move into our home and a special flight got put together through family, and we have now started procedures in California staying with my sister & her husband for a miracle.

The consultation with the doctor assigned to me at Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center was as good as it gets! The doc gave us almost an hour. We were very impressed with him just as we expected from reading about him and hearing his video. We feel very good about the skill we see working for us here. I filled him on many details, and he had command of all my records for a long time. He put us on his agenda for a meeting with his director of transplants, and told us he’d be calling me with a plan. That’s a God thing! He says we have work to do, but said he can help us. He’s searching out the options for us, interaction with Houston’s MD Anderson, and more. I’ll be back into chemo in Oregon shortly probably with an added drug in getting my body ready, possibly likely to be getting a bone marrow transplant. It’ll take time. Lots of details. No simple experience, but we see positive hope! My blood numbers were actually better than they have been for months our second day here. We feel very encouraged with it all.

The doctor here in CA has a huge background with my factors. He says he’s going to figure this out—you can see his wheels moving. He says we’re going to get this; he can help us out. He says I’m thinking what’s best for you. We see God’s intervention everywhere!

We are now going back to Portland, getting the chemo treatments there, with a view to seeing remission take place. Only then would I be ready for the bone marrow transplant, which is quite risky. It’s not automatic. Time will tell. God knows & I trust Him.

The prayers will be important to continue on!!😀 It’s miracle work. Thanks for the support. ☝️🙏🏻

Journal entry by Linda Weber

Remission—I’m told I am now in remission, after the hematologist malignancy/high risk MDS. That is a big deal after this year long process, thank you Lord. This is true, yet I’m told that it’ll be a year that things can pop up still and that I’ll need to go on being very careful to avoid germs. I’m still 20 days from that 100 day mark they expect the extensive restriction list to be honored. Insurance requires it. I’ll look forward to driving again. My caregivers have been oh so busy doing so much for me. (Sandi & sister Judy) My young immune system needs to be guarded. The doctor and staff will even be regiving me childhood vaccinations since they have destroyed so much of my body in getting ready for that new transplanted bone marrow.

In celebrating my new birthday from the transplant, I have just got a new February birthstone ring in honor of this God allowed lease on life. It’s purple & very fun. Reminds me of answered prayers—many thanks to all of you.

After 30 chemo sessions and much more which you’ve heard about along the way, I may have a few more days of that in some weeks, and there will be at least 3 more biopsies till February. The biweekly blood draws and doctor appointments go on—I’m continued to be impressed with the knowledgeable care I get at OHSU to take care of this complicated disease.

After 3 blood clots, for which I take specific drugs, I do pray they get totally resolved. Many drugs have been stopped but there are still plenty I’m required to take in preventing oft common issues that can do damage. (I never use to take any drugs, much less go to doctors.) Since they have expected problems to arise from transplants I’ve been required to not be left alone, which has required “babysitters” here & there.

Generally, I’m doing quite well. My hair has grown to about 1/4 inch—I will enjoy getting my hair back in time. It’s a small price to pay.

Whether it’s disease, losses, relationship issues, hardships of any kinds, we have opportunity to trust a big God and enjoy growth in our lives as we truly have a mindset to overcome, however God chooses for us. I truly believe His principles I’ve had opportunity to follow as I had laid out in my book, Mindset Choices. I trust you will choose to overcome your hardships.

Jer. 20:11 The Lord is with me like a mighty warrior.
