Journal entry by Emily Alexander

During the three weeks leading to Tuesday April 16th- My 5 month old daughter at the time was having problems with constant congestion. As a mother, I wanted Elaina to feel better so during the week of March 25th, I took Elaina to Urgent Care to get checked out. I went to Urgent Care where Elaina was exhausted and was sleeping in her car seat. When we went into the consulting room I asked the nurse if I needed to take Elaina out of her car seat so she could be examined. The nurse simply said no because the baby is fine. During the appointment, I didn't even see a doctor because all the Urgent Care nurse did was take her temperature while she was in her car seat and told me she was fine and to go home. As a 1st time mother, I thought I could trust Urgent Care and that was very ignorant of me. As the week gone by, during the week of April 2nd Elaina started getting more congested and there was a time where I thought she was getting an ear infection. I then, took her back to Urgent Care. This time, I took Elaina out of her car seat and told a different nurse of my complaint. She simply looked at her ears without running any tests and told me she had no ear infection and it was just pressure from the mucous and told me she was fine. I, again, mistakenly believed Urgent care and took Elaina home.... Elaina started progressing even more with her congestion, so once again I took her back to Urgent Care on April 12th. This time, Urgent Care noticed the congestion too. They tested for the flu and RSV and they were both negative, they also did a lung xray and that showed nothing significant either. They didn't run anymore tests or examine her body anymore. They just gave her a quick breathing treatment and told me that it is just mucus. I made the mistake of believing them because Elaina did start to sound better after the breathing treatment...... To be continued.
