Libby’s Story

Site created on October 31, 2011

Hi!

Welcome to My Cancer update page.  Diagnosis of Stage II breast cancer in early October 2011 really knocked me for a loop!  (Promoted to Stage IIIA after surgery.) No family history, no other health issues at all (except for the usual age-induced falling-apart annoyances).

This page will be updated by me or friends/family during recovery.  Please call or email at any time, especially since I'll be sitting around on my new sofa for the next few months.

Love,

Libby

As the ABC song goes, "Vanity Kills" - but not in this case!  I went in for a cosmetic surgery consultation, but the dang doctors kept insisting on tests "just to make sure."  Inconclusive mammogram, but suspicious something on the ultrasound, and really suspicious somethings on the MRI.  So in my world, "Vanity Saves!"  :)

Newest Update

Journal entry by Libby Smith

Or how about "Happy Spring!"?  Cheers to all of you wonderful people.

At about this time last year I was just finishing chemo.  What a difference a year makes!

Here's what's new:
  • Ready for my second haircut!
  • When I put gel in, there're loose hairs on my hand!
Not so much new, then, as back to normal.  :)  A new thing, though, is a super-fun side effect of the Tamoxifen:  sun sensitivity!  I discovered this when I realized that the funny-looking zits on my nose were actually small blisters.  A challenge for summer, certainly, for me who LOVES the sun and getting a tan.  Daily sunscreen application is now my routine.

Here's another thing:  I'm running a 10k in Marin County on March 30 and doing a little fundraising for the Breast Cancer Emergency Fund (BCEF) - a great organization that supports low-income women dealing with breast cancer.  For women who don't have insurance to cover treatments or enough money for rent or to keep the lights on, BCEF is there to pay the bills.

This is the second year that some friends and I have participated as Team Liberators!  Last year I walked the 5k with two teammates - we finished dead last!  Well, we were ambling, really.  This year I plan to run the 10k, but since I haven't been training, it may end up as a 5k repeat.

If you're local and you'd like to participate, please join the team here. Some of my teammates are bragging about how they're going to raise the most money on our team - if you'd like to donate and help me whup their butts, you can do that here.

Love to you all!
