Newest Update

Journal entry by Melanie Jacks

Today one year ago Liam had his amputation.
Last weekend he did his first full taekwondo testing after getting cancer and he did awesome. He was kicking and breaking boards - all with his prosthetic leg. He’s come a very very long way in a year. Before the amputation we weren’t even sure he’d be walking by now.
We also had our 21 month scans this week. Everything came back clear.
In July we get our two year set of scans and that is just huge!!
Two years post treatment with no sign of the cancer returning. There were so many times I didn’t think we’d be here.
His doctor said that after the two year all clear we don’t have to get scans as often. Maybe every six months.
While that is amazing and awesome to hear from this doctor it’s also scary. For the doctor to think we can go six months between scans is an amazing milestone, but my nervous mom heart likes knowing that every three months I’ll know if everything is still ok or not.
But this is good news. They are not worried about Liam anymore. His doctors both said how proud they are of him and how amazing he has been through this whole thing.
Sadly we had to say goodbye to Dr Maggie - one of Liam’s favorites because she is finishing her fellowship and going back to her hometown. We knew this was happening but it’s still sad. We plan to stay in touch though. (Maggie had the same leg cancer as Liam when she was 19 so they bonded)
But in general good news all around for us. It’s crazy to be on this side of things. When you are in it all you can think about is how to get to the next day sometimes the next hour and now st Jude is a blip that happens every now and then. We will always live with the effects of what we went through both physically and emotionally but I’m where I barely hoped to be  one, two and nearly three years ago.
We have a lot to be grateful for.
