Levi’s Story

Site created on June 29, 2022

After a persistent knee pain turned into a persistent limp, we had Levi’s knee looked at, and learned that the cause of his pain was a malignant tumor called osteosarcoma. This was discovered shortly before his 15th birthday. He has since had several rounds of chemo and a tumor excision with knee replacement. And the chemo continues. Through it all, Levi has amazed us with his strength of will and his sense of humor.

I do not want to delay getting this post out, Please forgive my grammatical and spelling errors.

This halloween was the scariest one of all. It started the day before with a trip to the ER. The medical team called a rapid response because Levi was struggling to breathe. An x-ray revealed that in addition to fluid building up around his left lung, now his right lung had fluid surrounding it. The fluid was squeezing his lungs and making it hard to breathe. Levi went into surgery to drain the fluid inside his chest wall. Up until last week I had never heard of pleural effusion and I still wish I never had.

On Halloween morning things did not improving much. Levi wanted out of the hospital in time to pass out candy. We did not think this would happen. Richard and I sat with Levi's oncologist who was dressed as cow Ken from the barbie movie and with him we filled out a DNR. We sat there with tears in our eyes wondering how can we be having this conversation with cow boy Ken? One by one the angelic nurses who were also dressed up as a different barbies would come into the room to hold Levi's hand, give him morphine, and share their favorite memories of Levi from one of his 25+ admissions.

Levi is a fighter! He made it home for Halloween! Our amazing neighbors and friends brought Halloween to our yard. We had spider webs, pumpkin lights, a fire pit and more. Our house transformed back into the party house we bought it to be. The energy and love that filled our house was a beautiful sight to see.

Our dear friend Heidi has been planning a party for Levi. I knew the party was planned for November 1st, but it was not looking like he would be there.. The party happened! We witnessed a miracle ! Levi said he had not felt this good in months. He did not even use his oxygen tank  during the party.  There is no medical explanation as to how Levi felt this good. I know it was God, it just had to be. The friends, neighbors, and even strangers who helped make this night happen will always be apart of a happy memory we share with Levi.  The party was held at The Dayton brick shop aka the local Lego store. The is Levi's happy place,  the place he gets to go and be his creative self and not be reminded of his physical limitations.

Levi is  currently at the hospital getting a chest x_ray to check the fluid accumulation. We suspect there is, but this does not take away from the miracle of time we had with Levi and friends. It is hard to believe just the day before we were filling out a time sensitive DNR for Levi. Richard and I live in a constant state of fear, fear of time, fear of health, and fear of all the things in between. Last night we had some reprieve. We smiled, laughed, and most shocking of all I washed my hair.

We still understand the awful situation we are faced with, but we have had a miracle that recharges us to fight along side Levi. Thank you for your prayer,  good thoughts, and everything that I know has given way to the last couple of days. We feel every ounce of love and each sacred  pray offered for Levi..

Please know Levi is a fighter.  He has ask me several time "who do you think is more stubburn me or the cancer?".  My sweet boy it is you.
