Journal entry by Merry Beth Hovey Freienmuth —
As we turn the page to 2024, our focus is on getting Lee's strength back so he can regain some of his independence. Over the past two months his physical and cognitive condition has been declining, to the point where he needs assistance around the clock for even the most basic things he used to be able to do by himself. Because the medical system moves slowly over the holidays, it took a long time for Maria to get a referral for Lee to be assessed at Courage Kenney Center. This past week he was approved for twice weekly out-patient services for speech, physical, and occupational therapies. Fingers crossed, this will be enough to get him back to where he was a few months ago, and beyond!
Like a toddler who stops listening to one parent and will only listen to the other, so was Lee acting when his immediate family would try to get him to do his at-home exercises and therapy assignments. Brother Steve, sister Kadi, and I are committing to each coming weekly to get him moving and working on those assignments, building on his Courage Kenney schedule, and giving Maria and Erin a break.
This morning Lee got himself from the living room to the kitchen to make toast! He told Maria he is feeling stronger and he appears to be motivated to keep that trend going.
Sharing pictures from my time with Lee today, where we did some yoga, stretching, and range-of-motion exercises. Love that smile!
Calls and texts to Lee are still welcome. Lee's cell 612-799-0907
Happy new year,
