Layla’s Story

Site created on May 3, 2023

Hi, my name is Layla, and I was admitted to Gillette Children's Hospital on Sunday and am being treated for a traumatic brain injury. I am sassy and sweet, and I’ve proven to all of my friends and family that, most of all, I am a fighter!

Thanks for following and supporting me on my journey to recovery!

Journal entry by Courtney Larsen

The last week in rehab has been a busy one for Layla. Her days have been full with a variety of different therapies that she has been WALKING to and from for the past two days now. She no longer needs her wheelchair and we started having heavy discussion about going home. She will not have a need for outpatient speech therapy after she is discharged, but she will continue occupational therapy and physical therapy for 6+ weeks afterwards.

The staff at Gillette still is not expressing anything less than astonishment over Layla’s rapid recovery, however, this has presented complications because this type of injury typically warrants inpatient psych care, but she’s doing so well that providers aren’t wanting to take her. This lead the Psych team to NEXUS care and NEXUS care hand picked Layla to be recipient of a grant that covers 90 days of intensive outpatient care in our home.

I’ve been busy working with the Gillette and NEXUS care teams to establish an outpatient plan but the failures with mental health care system are becoming more evident today as I am now being told by evening team social workers that we must follow the recommendation of Gillette’s Psychiatric Consultant who recommended inpatient treatment and she could be transferred as soon as today to a facility in Fargo. That’s absolutely not happening if I have anything to do with it but they gave her a COVID test anyways….

Annoyed, but remaining positive and I also wanted to note that we have been getting a lot of needed rest, which is why I haven’t posted as many updates recently.

Thanks again for the continued prayers, love and support.

Sincerely,

Courtney
