Newest Update

Journal entry by Lauren Hicks

Hey everyone!

I feel like this post will be more of a conclusion than an update! I am so thankful for all of you who have read along and joined us in prayer and encouragement over the last 8-9 months. I remember how daunting the task felt at the beginning and it feels good to be where I am today. In my last post, I mentioned that I would likely be completing radiation post surgery. Well after meeting with the radiation oncologist at MDA as well as a local radiation oncologist, everyone agreed that radiation was not medically necessary for me since I had a complete response to chemo along with the double mastectomy. So, I am officially done with treatment!!! I am back at work and we are in a routine now. I am so thankful for a routine, to be back at work and feeling like myself.

God has taught me many things over the past months... some I have shared and others I have kept private. He has been there in the tough, dark days as well as the encouraging, good days. I was given a women's devotional book at the beginning of this journey by a sweet friend entitled, "Praying through Cancer". One of the devotionals highlighted Isaiah 26: 3-4, which states, "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock." I love the part that uses the phrase "perfect peace." We all need peace. 2020 needs peace! 😳And true, everlasting peace only comes through Christ.

If you have never had cancer, one of the struggles after treatment is the "whats ifs" of the future... the fear of recurrence. For 8-9 months, I have traveled to one of the best cancer treatments in the world and followed their course of action. And now I am done! Of course there are follow up appointments with oncologists in the future, but that consistent security in following "the plan" has ended. I would ask that you would pray for continued peace for us... and all other cancer survivors that you know.

Our family is doing really well. We are happy to be returning to a sense of normalcy in everyday life. Some of my takeaways from this time: Don't take for granted the normal. Don't sweat the small stuff. Look for ways to meet needs. Go to church and serve. Travel with your family. Find humor wherever you can! And most importantly, love Jesus and rest in his perfect peace.

Thank you all for your continued love and prayers!
