Lauren’s Story

Site created on January 16, 2020

Lauren has recently had her world turned upside down. She was healthy, preparing for Christmas and at 33 weeks pregnant her and Eric were getting ready to welcome their 3rd son on February 10. She became ill just before Christmas and ended up hospitalized for 3 weeks, then spent 6 days in Mercy inpatient rehab.  She has been diagnosed with a very rare condition called opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome. Just prior to this diagnosis, I'm happy to say she delivered a precious and healthy baby boy, Vance Gabriel on January 6. I'd like to thank all of our family and friends for all of their prayers, love and support so far on this journey. It's far from over as we continue to decide on treatment plans, but each day gets a little brighter.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Lauren Darr

With some good news to share, I just had to make one last post for 2020, a year to date from when I was admitted to the hospital.
I had a PET Scan this week to be sure that I am cancer free. If you remember, what happened to me is most common in children, and they typically find a cancer in relation. There is less research out there for an adult, let alone a pregnant one, so they had checked me for everything possible. Nothing was ever found, and with that I was considered an anomaly. And I’m happy to say they didn’t find any cancer in this follow up scan either!
My neurologist will still check in once a year over the next 5 years.
It’s crazy thinking back to this time last year and remembering the feelings of uncertainty. Here I am now, having made a full recovery.  My neurologist says it’s remarkable, the pace at which I returned to normal. Although 8 months doesn’t fly by when you’re just trying to get through one day at a time, I think now it wasn’t all bad. I am so much stronger than I ever thought possible. And this experience made me realize that. There is so much to be thankful for. Cheers to a new year of health and happiness!
