Journal

I’m grateful each day to be surrounded by such a wide community and for all that continue to show up in the big and small ways, near and far. As you all know, Laurel is a fighter and continues to make great leaps in recovery.

It’s been long seven weeks but for Laurel she says it only feels she’s been here a week which I think is a good thing. Last Sunday, throughout the day Laurel kept asking if she was dreaming or if this was real. She was constantly tired and it was hard for her to know what was real vs a dream. That night I read her some of many cards people have written and she was again overwhelmed by the love she felt. On Monday she said she felt like she just “woke up” and had so many realizations over night. She had lots of questions, many that had been discussed with her previously but this was different. She was more aware/awake than ever, less whispering as she had been, more talking of her own ideas and very chit chatty. She mentioned feeling like she’s back in her body. This awareness has allowed her to actively participate in many of her therapies. Each of therapy has uniquely allowed her to gain strength, independence and understanding. With minimal assistance she is able to do most things on her own. On Thursday with Therapeutic Recreation we got to walk a few blocks over to the art museum. She enjoyed that very much. Her naps have become shorter and less frequent. It can still be quite difficult for her to remember all that’s goes on in the day or the day prior. I remind her  things we did that day when she asks but I also keep telling her that I can barely remember what I did that day. At times she says how this all still feels like a dream and she’s ready to wake up and be back at home. I’ll show her videos of weeks back to show her how much progress she’s already made. I often read her the cards, show her messages or videos. She feels so loved and encouraged by all of it

Laurel wanted me to say thank everyone that has brought such great home cooked meals. You might be able to guess how she feels about hospital food.

The target still stands to be home Friday 12/15. We are both very eager. She will continue to have outpatient rehabilitation as well as the at home recovery clinic brought to you by Josh. With all this progress I know there is still great work ahead.

Carry on bravely,

Josh
